There are wonderful stories behind the unique guitars that were originally made by J.W. Gallagher, a skilled woodworker. He wanted to build instruments of the same quality and with the skilled care that he had put into making furniture, and in 1965 he built his first guitar.
J.W. and his son, Don, attended the Fiddler’s Convention in 1969. They brought a rosewood G-70 and a mahogany G-50. Although J.W. did not want to sell the G-50 because it was cracked in production, legendary guitarist Doc Watson was partial to that one, and J.W. just let Doc have it on loan to give back when he didn’t want to play it any more. However, it ended up being played by Doc on many recordings, was called “Ol Hoss” by Doc, and is on display at the Nashville, Tennessee’s Country Music Hall of Fame.
In 1974, a guitar was made by J.W. for Doc, who wanted some particular features. That was named the Doc Watson Model. Constructed of African Mahogany, it has a Stika Spruce top, and the bracing on the top is shaped by hand and scalloped in order to produce a powerful tone. The bridge and fingerboard are ebony for beauty and durability.
When J.W. retired in 1976, Don took over operating the shop and helped bring traditional guitar making into the 21st century. In 2015, Don’s son Stephen became the third generation to continue the Gallagher Guitars Co. legacy.
These famous guitars are still built by hand and in limited numbers with each taking three months and 70 to 80 hours of skilled workmanship and excellent craftsmanship.
The very first Gallagher cherry guitar, model Gallagher G-50C, built in the late summer of 2016, was made from a stash of old growth cherry purchased by J.W. in the 1950s. The current shop owner, Stephen, and his father, Don, glued on the bridge, put in the tuners, wound the strings, put everything together, and a new guitar was born!
Acoustic Vibes Music is the premier acoustic music store in Arizona and the West. Established in 2007, they stock major brands of guitars and other fine instruments including the spectacular guitars by Gallagher. They do not use standard pictures to show their great inventory because the unique characteristics of each individual instrument would not be represented that way. Original pictures showcase all the features of each instrument that is in stock. They can accommodate your desires whether you are looking to purchase a first acoustic guitar, upgrade a current guitar, or add to your precious collection.
